Information Commons and Cudahy Library Facilities Projects

Basic Information

Information Commons Refresh

After 15 years and millions of visits from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members, the time has come for an Information Commons refresh. Carpeting and furniture will be replaced in the building during the summer of 2023. To ensure everyone’s safety, the last day the IC will be open is Friday, May 12. The building will be closed from May 13 through mid-August to allow for the work to be completed.

During the closure period, IC services, including the Research Help Desk, Equipment Loan program, and Writing Center, will be relocated to Cudahy Library. Please see below for locations for these services. Entry to Cudahy Library will remain through the IC front doors. There will be no restrictions to Cudahy Library access over the summer. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, guests, and community members are welcome to use the library during building hours.

The furniture and carpeting replacement will be followed by a technology upgrade to the IC 4th floor. We will share the timeline for that phase of the work as soon as it is finalized. The Loyola community can expect a more comfortable and improved IC environment after the refresh project is completed.

Please check this page frequently for updates and information.

Cudahy Library Perimeter Work

This summer, the university will be undertaking various stormwater improvements and interventions to protect campus buildings, including Cudahy Library (see below for more details). This work will be occurring alongside the IC refresh project.  Floors 1-3 of Cudahy Library will be fully open for access to books, service desks, and study spaces. The Lower Level and Mezzanine will be closed for the duration of the stormwater project to allow work on the building’s stormwater systems. We will communicate any other changes to services or hours throughout the summer.

The Cudahy Library Stormwater Project includes separation of the storm and sanitary systems as they exit the building, installation of new sump pumps dedicated to handle the storm load only, replacement of the perimeter drain tile, as well as  installation of a new storm detention vault that will drain to the existing Information Commons lake outfall.

Cudahy Library Limited Building Hours June 5, 2023 – July 3 2023

From Monday, June 5 though July 3 there will be no access to restrooms in Cudahy. The restrooms and water fountains on the first floor of the IC will be available during this time, so library users should plan in advance. During this period Cudahy Library will be open 9-5 Monday to Friday and closed weekends.

Women and Leadership Archives in Piper Hall

Piper Hall will be closed beginning May 13.  The building will be part of Loyola’s stormwater improvements and interventions to protect campus buildings. This project includes separation of the storm and sanitary systems.  As spaces are being prepared for this work, access to collections will be limited in the weeks to come. We will share more information as we have it. See the Women and Leadership Archives website.

More Information and Access to Services

Access to Books and Bound Journals

Access to Cudahy Library books will remain throughout the summer. Study space within the library may be limited.
