Troubleshooting Tips for E-Reserves

The following is a list of common questions that arise when trying to access E-reserves.

Password Problems | Memory Requirements | Adobe Acrobat | Image Problem

Printing Problems | Additional Help

Password Problems:

The system is not accepting the password I am entering.

Passwords are case-sensitive! Just like your Loyola password, the password for the reserves cannot be typed in upper or lowercase interchangeably. Make sure that you type them in precisely as given before clicking OK. Otherwise, you will not be able to access the reserves.

For courses placed on Electronic Reserve before June 2001, both a username and password may be required. If you are unsure whether your course requires both. Please ask your instructor to verify.

If you have double-checked the password you instructor gave you and are still experiencing problems, please contact a library Reference desk.

Memory Requirements:

Is it possible my computer's too old to view E-reserves?

You should have a machine with at least 64 mb of memory (RAM). The more the better! All lab and library computers on campus meet this requirement.

To determine the amount of memory your computer has:

  • Go to the Start menu.
  • Scroll up to Programs.
  • Scroll up to Command Prompt.
  • Type in mem
  • It will then list the amount of memory that your computer has.

You should also have a printer with a reasonable amount of memory. We haven't established the exact amount, but people with older printers sometimes have problems printing even if their PC has enough memory.

Adobe Acrobat:

I don't see a facsimile of the article.
My computer is telling me "Need to load plug-in."

You must have Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4.05 or higher loaded on your machine to view documents. Most newer Windows set-ups come with it already installed.

Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

There are 2 different installations procedures to ensure that Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.05 is installed before you attempt to access E-reserves in Pegasus.

1. If you are using your personal computer at home...

  • Download Adobe Acrobat Reader FREE from the Adobe web site!
  • Pay attention to which folder (EX: D:/Temp) the file is saving. You may need to locate the file after it has finished loading and double-click on it in order to execute the program.
  • You will need to restart your computer before attempting to access E-reserves

2. If you are using a computer on Loyola's campus...

  • Click on the Start menu
  • Select Loyola Software
  • Select Internet Tools
  • Click on Adobe Acrobat 4.0
  • Your computer will then download the files for Adobe Acrobat 4.0 to a folder.
  • Once it has finished downloading Adobe Acrobat 4.0. minimize the Adobe Acrobat window and open Internet Explorer.
  • Go to Pegasus
  • This will ensure that Adobe Acrobat 4.0 is being used to open the image files.

Image Problems:

The article looks huge on the screen!

If you have downloaded Adobe Acrobat and the image, which appears on your screen is larger than your viewing window and/or the printed image is magnified, try the tips below.

  • Close your Internet browser.
  • Open Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Click on File.
  • Scroll down to Preferences.
  • Select General.
  • Within General Preferences, under the Magnification heading, you will see the heading Default Zoom.
  • Scroll down to Fit Width.
  • Click OK.
  • The image of the article should now fit within the width of the screen and print at standard size.

Printing Problems:

It's printing too slow, my computer's freezing up!

  • Wait until the Adobe Acrobat has finished downloading the entire article before attempting to print the article.
  • Printing the article will consume the most memory on your machine. If you have problems printing, close all programs you may have running.
  • In Adobe 4.05 or higher, you may see a check box with the caption Print as Image in the printing dialogue box. Clicking on this option facilitates printing.
  • If the system is locking up, try printing one page at a time.
  • Be patient! We try to minimize the size of image files, but some will still be rather large. Sometimes it may take 5 or 10 minutes to print an extremely large article. If you have insufficient memory or an older operating system, it may take longer, or be entirely impossible. With less than 64 mb, you might have to try some of these tips.

Additional Help

If you've tried the above tips and you're still having trouble accessing E-Reserves, paper copies of the reserves may be available. Contact a library Reference Desk for further assistance.
