Circulation Services
Charges and Renewals
The Circulation personnel can charge, discharge, or renew
materials for you to use. Faculty may borrow books until
the end of the academic year, but all books are subject
to recall after two weeks. Don't forget, you will need
your valid Loyola ID card to receive any of these services.
Note: Effective July 1, 2009, library privileges will be suspended if:
- books are more than 35 days overdue (and declared lost)
- recalled books are not returned by the due date
- replacement costs on long overdue books are not paid
We do not charge faculty for processing fees or overdue fines on Loyola materials.
Holds and Recalls
Books already in circulation but due back shortly can
be held for you upon return. Faculty, staff, and students
may request that a circulated book be recalled after the
first two weeks of the initial loan period. Forms for recalls
are available at the circulation desks of all libraries
and online at the University Libraries' website. The requestor
will be notified when a recalled book is available. Books
will be recalled immediately if needed for reserves. When
a book is recalled, the borrower is given ten days to return
the materials. Failure to respond to a recall notice will
result in the suspension of library privileges.
Faculty Proxy Authorization Card
Faculty members may authorize graduate assistants to charge
out materials in their name. Authorization cards are available
at the circulation desks. Faculty are responsible for materials
charged out in this manner.
Searches
If a book cannot be found in the stacks, a search can
be initiated by inquiring at the Circulation Desk or by
filling out an electronic
form. Notification of the result
of the search will be mailed within seven days.
Jesuit Library Passport
The faculty of Jesuit colleges and universities now have
borrowing privileges at all 28 Jesuit institutions in the
United States. The Jesuit Library Passport is a nationwide
reciprocal borrowing program. Faculty have access to the
collective holdings of all Jesuit institutions.
These holdings include:
-Over 20 million books
-200,000 print journals
-30 million microforms
-800,000 audio/visual materials
Ask at the Cudahy or Lewis
Library Circulation Desk for a Jesuit Library Passport
borrower form. Then take the
completed, signed form with you to the participating
library, together with your Loyola University ID Card.
Please remember
that borrowing privileges are determined by the host
library and may or may not be similar to your borrowing
privileges
at Loyola University Libraries.
Reserves
Library owned books, personal books, exams, lecture notes,
homework solutions, and photocopies of articles or chapters
of books may be placed on reserve at the library. Items
may also be placed on electronic
reserve. For a full description
of how to place things on reserve, see the Reserve

Audiovisual Collection Services
Audiovisual materials may be requested at each of the
Lakeside Libraries. Audiovisual equipment will be delivered
and set up by Media Services.
Printable (pdf) brochure of the Audiovisual Handbook
Loyola Audiovisual Materials Collection
Audiovisual materials are available for use in the classroom
by Loyola faculty and in the libraries individual viewing
rooms. The materials include videotapes, videodiscs, multimedia
CD ROMS, films, compact discs, audio cassettes, records,
and slide sets. A broad range of subjects are represented
in these collections. Access to the collection is available
through Pegasus, the library's online catalog. Reference
staff can be consulted for assistance in identifying titles.
FACULTY REQUEST FOR AUDIOVISUAL
MATERIALS forms are available
at the circulation desks and online at the library's Web
site. Please allow 2-4 business days to process requests
for Loyola owned materials. Requested materials may be
picked up at the circulation desk at any of the Lakeside
Libraries for a 3 day loan.
Purchase of Materials for Loyola Audiovisual Collection
Materials
are purchased for the collection on an ongoing basis in
order to keep the audiovisual collection current
with representative selections in many subject areas. Loyola
faculty members are encouraged to make suggestions for
materials that they believe will be useful in their teaching
or that will be helpful to their students' independent
study. The REQUEST FOR
PURCHASE OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS form should be completed and sent to the Audiovisual Services
Coordinator.
Rental of Audiovisual Materials for Classroom
Use (no
charge to departments)
When audiovisual materials are not owned by Loyola, but
are needed by a Loyola faculty member for a class on a
specific date, Audiovisual Collection Services will rent
them for a classroom showing. Because this service involves
working with outside sources, at least two weeks' advance
notice is required. The FACULTY
REQUEST FOR AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS form will initiate this service.
Preview of Audiovisual Materials
Audiovisual Collection Services can request that audiovisual
material be sent from an outside distributor to a faculty
member who wants to evaluate it for purchase or future
rental. Because they are not intended for classroom use,
these materials are sent from the distributor when they
are available and cannot be requested for a specific date.
The FACULTY REQUEST FOR
AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS form will
initiate this service.
Media Resource Collection of Indexes, Catalogs,
and Brochures (research assistance is available)
A collection of indexes, catalogs and brochures is available
to assist in the identification of audiovisual materials
in specific subject areas that are available on the market
and in other libraries and audiovisual centers. Loyola
can use these electronic and paper sources to identify
new audiovisual materials for instruction and to selecting
rental and preview titles. The Audiovisual Services Coordinator
can assist in finding titles and in helping to locate sources.
Projection Rooms for Class and Group Viewing

sound systems and slide projectors. Both campuses have
video projectors which make large scale video viewing possible.
Loyola faculty members can reserve these rooms on a first-come
basis for classroom instruction or small group viewing
for their students. Contact Media Services at 4-4444 or
(773) 508-7190 off campus to reserve these rooms.
