Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service which obtains materials
that are not otherwise available in the Loyola University
libraries. Materials necessary for study and research,
such as books and theses, may be borrowed from other
libraries. Photocopies of periodical articles may also
be acquired. Loyola University libraries follow the conditions
of this service set by the National Interlibrary Loan
Code, 1993 (adopted by the American Library Association).
So that you make the best use of the service, please
take a few minutes to read through the information listed
below.
For information about InterCampus Loan (ICL), please visit
this
page.
Who may use ILL?
Loyola faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and
staff may use this service. Patrons who are affiliated
with the Law School or the Medical School should direct
their requests to their home libraries.
What's available through ILL?
Books, theses, and some materials reproduced in microform,
such as newspapers, may be borrowed. Photocopies of periodicals
articles may be requested in accordance with the U.S. copyright
law. Items missing from the Loyola libraries may also be
obtained after a search has been done for the material.
What's not available through ILL?
The following types of materials may not be borrowed through
interlibrary loan: books owned at a Loyola library; periodical
volumes; textbooks; materials for reserve, group, or extended
use; computer software; and reference books.
Effective August 1, 2007, all media items (CDs, DVDs,
and VHS) requested through interlibrary loan must be for
academic or job-related purposes. Undergraduate students
are required to provide proof of the academic nature of
their request via a syllabus, course assignment, or note
from their professor. Any questions about this policy should
be directed to Jennifer Stegen at 773-508-6022 or jstegen@luc.edu.
How do I place an order?
Pegasus, Loyola's online catalog, should always be consulted
before submitting an interlibrary loan request. Loyola
libraries also have access to over 25,000 full-text periodicals
and newspapers. Please consult the library's listing
of full-text titles to determine if the libraries have
access to the material.
All interlibrary loan requests are managed through our
ILLiad system. Before placing a request, patrons must create
a secure account by filling out a registration form and
creating a username and password. Once you have an ILLiad account, simply log in to place a request. You can also
send a request from any FirstSearch database by clicking
the "ILLiad" link and entering your username
and password.
How long will it take?
Plan ahead when requesting materials. The time required
for material to arrive depends upon how close the lending
library is to Loyola and how many libraries may own the
material. A minimum of two weeks should be allowed to
search, process, and receive each request.
How will I know it's in?
When the material has been received, notification will
be sent to the email address provided during registration.
Books should be picked up promptly in order to make
use of the entire loan period. We will also contact you
if
the item you have requested is already owned by the
Library or cannot be obtained. To check the status of
your interlibrary
loan request, please contact the Interlibrary Loan
staff in person, phone, or by e-mail, or log into your
ILLiad account to view your interlibrary loan transactions
online.
How long may I keep it?
The loan period is determined by the library lending
the material and is usually from two to four weeks.
One renewal
for two additional weeks may be requested only if
it is before the due date. Please log in to your ILLiad account
to request a renewal. No renewals can be made for
material
that is already overdue.
