Shelf Life: News From the Loyola University Libraries

A Message From Dean Seal

As the academic year comes to a close, the University Libraries can look back with pride to a successful 2006-07. Much was accomplished by the staff who maintained their well-deserved reputation for outstanding service to our students and faculty. Among their many achievements were:

  • The initiation of an annual user survey to provide feedback to help us improve services and collections.
  • The installation of group computing workstations at Cudahy and Lewis. These have been extremely popular with our students.
  • The implementation of a more lenient food & drink policy to make the libraries more comfortable and welcoming.

  • Planning for and implementation of a new website expected in the fall of 2007.

  • The recruitment of 13 new staff members and announcement of several internal promotions.

  • The initiation of an oral history project focusing on key figures in Loyola's history.

  • Early planning for the future Cudahy Library renovation.
  • Continued planning for the Information Commons set to open in January 2008.

  • A reorganization of the University Libraries to better reflect user needs and library goals.

  • An enhanced Library Speaker Series featuring Loyola History Professors Susan Hirsch and Timothy Gilfoyle, and authors Jeff Guinn (The Autobiography of Santa Claus) and Erik Larson (The Devil in the White City).

  • The reclassification of the book collection at the Rome Center Library, a significant effort by our Cataloging and Systems departments.

  • A major upgrade of the library's automation system.

And those are just the highlights. The coming year should be even more exciting with the opening of the Information Commons. I hope all of you have a safe, relaxing, and productive summer.

With best wishes,

Bob Seal, Dean of Libraries
